This Year Almost Broke Me in Ways I Never Thought Possible (How I’m Moving Forward)

This year almost broke me in ways I never thought possible.

I started to wonder if it was me. If the way I work, and the principles I built my business on, just weren’t relevant anymore. The ache of outgrowing your old ways of doing business without quite knowing what comes next, cuts deep.

I’ve been in this biz for 14 years now, and the creative world has changed a lot in those 14 years. Words that were resonant then aren’t resonant today. The thoughts and ideas behind a lot of these ideals are no longer relevant today, heck some of the people that inspired me from day one aren’t even here on this earth anymore. Marketing has changed, messaging has changed, values have changed. And I’ve been struggling to keep up.

So I decided to truly take stock of where my business is, and where I want to go. A lot of my branding and messaging has remained unchanged since 2014. So I went deep – who am I as a designer in 2025? Who am I as a business owner in 2025? What do I need to do to line up work that feels true and authentic again?

I decided a slight brand refresh was necessary. In the same way I tell my clients that their brand needs to reflect their style, approach, and values, I need to do the same for myself.

So what does this mini-rebrand consist of, and why?

– Copy refresh

– New brand photos

– Slightly updated brand colors

– New messaging (real and raw)

– Different marketing/social media approach

And here are the reasons why:

– I want to attract a slightly different audience – more experienced and less beginner.

– I’m not the same person I used to be. I don’t even look the same. All of the photos on my website feel disjointed and outdated.

– I want to attract slightly different clients, ones that embrace color and a slightly more modern style (my beige era is over).

– Bookings are too slow, plain and simple.

– I want to embrace my role as a leader in the design community, not in a “ten ways to do x” sort of way. In a way that shows designers that it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but if you put in the work and take the time to truly learn, grow, and actually listen to your clients, the dream life you crave is so, so attainable.

This new journey started this afternoon with new brand photos. Here’s a peek at my inspo board – of course I’m taking them at the most beautiful and boujee cocktail bar in Buffalo. IYKYK.

Here’s a sneak peek!

Thank you for being on this journey with me, always!
